My largest piece to date...
Come see it in Denton, TX!
This piece was quite the challenge! For the first time ever I took my role as a community builder and facilitator for artists into the studio. I asked for submissions from any artist in community with me who wanted to participate. 48 artists sent scraps from their studio that were once part of pieces in process but became discarded or set aside. I collected the scraps and created a large scale quilt which is now installed in the Greater Denton Arts Center in Denton, TX. This piece is on display along with 2 more new pieces (my flag quilts) and work by my 3 other artist friends in the show!
"As four individual fiber artists, we each embody unique expressions and perspectives on the act of care—how it manifests in our art and our lives. Our works delve into the nuanced aspects of maternal care, from the legacies we hope to leave, to the advocacy we embody for those we care for, and the encouragement we find in one another. Our art speaks to the feelings of being careworn, yet resolute, reflecting the heavy but beautiful burden of our roles and responsibilities.
Care Full Connections is not just an exhibition; it is a testament to the power of shared experience. The bond we share as artist-mothers is the thread that ties this show together. Our connections are made carefully and deliberately, as we reach out to support one another amidst the demands of our full lives. Through our art, we seek to create a space where the complexities of care can be acknowledged and celebrated, offering both solace and strength.
In these pieces, you will see expressions of love and labor, of vulnerability and exhaustion, of the personal and the collective. We invite you to witness how care weaves through our lives and our art, forming a tapestry of connection that is as strong as it is tender."
All 4 of us will be in Denton on Friday November 8th for a reception!
The full show will be on display until February 1, 2025.
Warmly,
Kaylan
