💛 Care
Dear friends,
It has felt like a slow start to the year, but upon further reflection I am realizing that I am just not in a “slow” season of my life. I know so many people often complain about the length of January…
…but between a late start to the school year post Christmas break for my kids (Jan 7th) and a week away visiting family at the end of the month (due to the sudden passing of my beloved Uncle), this January went quite quickly for me (despite also being very hard).
And so, this first week of February seems like another place to “start”, as does any random day we choose to dedicate to new routines, perspectives, or beginnings.
It is a new beginning for me in a lot of ways as the end of 2024 had me walking away from a one beloved business and the start of 2025 was the opportunity for launching a new program, and beginning a new routine as residency director. I have anticipated the simplification of my work identities for many months now and it feels so good to have Kinhouse. The place in my community where I am welcoming artists in each week, curating great work from artists and providing exhibitions for my city to enjoy, and working directly with artists. I am feeling incredibly grateful to see my hard work over the years come together in this moment of convergence and clarity.
Yes, even cleaning the bathrooms and washing the sheets at the residency is on my weekly agenda right now and I am honestly enjoying this work that is so present and rooted in the exact moment I am in.
🌈 Community
While January was heavy on family time, community connections have still been abundant!
I recently had a great conversation and published a new episode with Hannah Chalew on the Artist/Mother podcast
Facilitated a 2 person show at Kinhouse with local Indianapolis artist Jen Broemel and welcomed Vancouver, CA based artist Jennie Johnston to Fort Wayne!
Spent many days mid January jurying “Those Who Tend”, an exhibition for artist caregivers that will be opening in April in NYC. It was such a delight to view almost 600 submissions and SO HARD to make my final selections!
A major January highlight was a day trip up to Detroit with dear friends and artist neighbors Dana Caldera and Hee Eun Michaelson to see the Warp & Weft:Technologies with Textiles Exhibition that my other dear friend Lisa Alberts was featured in. Go Lisa!!
Goals for February include lots of studio time as I continue preparing for my solo exhibition coming up in June at the Harrison Art Center in Indy. I’m also moving studios… eep! More on that in my next note.
Warmly,
Kaylan
More than ready to follow along with your practice in this new format! How exciting!
